Wiener what?

Food - Travel is one of the best forms of education a person can get. Especially when you travel to other countries and experience their culture, traditions and the food they eat; that is something you can not learn out of a text book, it must be lived! Travel can also really broaden ones horizon, literally, if your not careful. We start packing for our trip with all our fun, cute, tight fitting outfits, but soon, reality sets in and we know, we must include "room" for expansion. Don't act like you haven't done this before, unless your one of "those" tourists that looks like you had your clothes tattooed on by the end of the trip.

Most places I have traveled to, I have loved the food, but when we traveled to Germany, not so much. Let's just say, no expansion room was necessary. With food that starts with Wiener and ends in Schnitzel, just doesn't sound like something that is supposed to be eaten. Oh, there are various forms of Schnitzel too: Schnitzel Holstein, Jager Schnitzel, and Kalbsshnitzel, just in-case you didn't like the Wiener Schnitzel. But there's more, there were other dishes; Reiberkuchen, Rotekohl, Brotnodel, Spatzle, Sauerbraten (again anything with Sauer, I'm not eating.) And the pastries, well, lets just say they weren't: "Sweet." They use half of the sugar we use and I kinda like sugar, alot. But their liquor, now that's another story, they don't use half the alcohol that is forsure! There was an after dinner drink that could knock a buzzard of a sh** wagon - nothing bland about that. Of course, I was the odd one out, everyone else loved the food! And when in Germany, you do as the Germans do. I did try to like it, really, I did. My favorite meal of the day was breakfast. Fresh fruit, bagels, cheese...now we're talking. Maybe now that I am older, and somewhat, wiser I would like the food more. I certainly loved Germany and I would go back in a heart beat, just say when, I'll pack my Lederhosen.

Wiener Schnitzel
Ingredients:
6 thin veal cutlets
1/2 c. flour
2 eggs, beaten with one tbsp. water
salt and pepper
1/2 - 3/4 c bread crumbs
olive oil
Heat oil in a wide skillet over medium-high heat. Salt and pepper the flour and coat cutlets. Dip cutlets in mixture and dredge in breadcrumbs. Fry until golden brown (approx 5 minutes on each side) Serve with Spatzle (recipe below.)


Spatzle
Ingredients:
3 oz flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 egg
3 oz milk
3 oz. water (approx.)
2 oz. butter
In bowl, mix flour and salt and make a "well" in the center. Add egg and milk, beat well, add water slowly, adding only enough water to make a thick batter. Cover, let stand for 30 minutes.
In a large saucepan bring salted water to a boil. Hold colander over top of saucepan and slowly pour the batter into collander, allowing the mixture to drop down into the boiling water. Reduce heat and poach gently 15 minutes. Noodles will rise to surface when cooked. Remove from pan with a slotted spoon and drain well. Dot with butter and serve.
