Food - Do we eat to live, or live to eat? Food was intended to nourish our bodies, not make them overweight or obese. If, we eat to live, we adhere to the principals of eating strictly for the nutritional content and controlled portion size. Notice I said if? If, you have self control. If, you don't eat out of boredom, excitement, loneliness. If. If, only.
The question I have is: are we trained to eat for nourishment only? This past weekend I had an ah ha moment. I was in the lobby of a lodge and there were a lot people, people of all ages and a lot of families around, but I watched one family in particular. The mom, seated on a couch, the dad was following their young toddler son around. The toddler was in "his own little world," having a great time todd-il-ing around, when for no obvious reason, the mom says "Johnny, you want another cracker?" (Maybe I missed something, but I didn't think his name was Pauly). The toddler, toddeld over, took the cracker and went back into "his own little world."
That's when it "dawned" on me - pun intended - that from a very early age we are force fed (not out of malice). We are offered food without showing any signs of hunger. Think about it: when babies are, well babies, we feed them when they are hungry, but then if they cry, we think it can't be gas - no they must be hungry again. More food. And to help them sleep thru the night we give them cereal; we get excited when they can have solid food. More food.
Was this toddler crying for food? No.
Does this parent love their child so much they want to give them something? Maybe.
Is this child so cute that we want to see him eat? Maybe.
Was this kid having such a great time that we just love to see him happy (and full?). Could be. Why, do parents feed there kids food when they aren't hungry? Don't know.
All of the above? Could be.
If, we are "trained" from an early age it is easy to see how eating simply for nourishment turns into something more, later in life. I don't have the answer to any of these questions, they are merely "food for thought."
Bon Appetit!
